What is Freedom? A pretty good definition is “Ability to Choose”.

With that there are two big parts that freedom divides into:

Internal Freedom: Choice of Thoughts

Internal Freedom I am defining it as Choice of Thoughts.

Ability to choose the thoughts that are circulating in our mind.

Freedom is the only worthy goal in life - It is won by disregarding things outside of our control

External Freedom

External freedom can be defined as ability to choose our actions in the external world.

This is to be further divided into 2 main parts:

Financial Freedom

Freedom tied to externals and material things.

Financial freedom gives you ability to do what you want, when you want to a large extent.

This is crucial type of freedom as it gives you ability to choose how you allocate time.

Health Freedom

Ability to choose to move how you want to. Ability to choose to feel good physically.

While money help with achievement of this goal. Just having money is not going to help you. A separate continuous effort needs to be applied to have this freedom. You have to eat right and exercise.

The combination of the above is what makes up the external freedom you need. Both are essential; you can be financially free, but what if you don’t have a sufficient amount of health? Without health, you lack external freedom, as you can’t move the way you want to in the external world. Similarly, if you have health but no financial freedom, you often end up wearing a collar around your neck, surrendering a large portion of your day to day choices of actions in external world.

Getting Freedom

Discipline Leads to Freedom

discipline equals Freedom. - jocko-willink/Song - Discipline Equals Freedom

The way to interpret Jocko’s meaning in this quote is that discipline leads to freedom.

Interestingly strong discipline can lead to both types of freedom:

However, just relying on discipline does not sound like the most winning strategy. Discipline is very akin to self motivation. Pushing yourself to do something. Rather than being pulled to do something.

Likely a stronger strategy is being pulled towards magnetic-goals-that-pull-you-towards-them. Much easier to sustain your systems.
