When prompted once that how the notes he took are a record of his thinking process, Richard-Feynman replied:

Notes aren’t a record of my thinking process. They are my thinking process. – Richard-Feynman

He learned how to think on paper. Which gave him the ability to have much more memory than he actually had, and enabled higher clarity of thought. As it's much easier for the brain to fool itself while thinking. While the gaps of understanding are much more visible when writing.
